Surgery Day for "Saya"
Admit Appointment

|
In the morning, the Veterinary Nurse welcomes Saya and her mom. She takes
Saya's temperature, pulse and respiration prior to surgery to make sure her vital
signs indicate that she is healthy for surgery. The nurse answers any questions that
Saya's mom may have and at the end, has Saya's mom "tuck her in" to what will be
her kennel for the day.
|
Custom Anesthesia + Pain Control Protocol

|
The Veterinary Nurse relays the findings of Saya's vital signs to the doctor, who
will formulate a specific mixture of anesthesia and drugs for Saya based on her
sex, weight and body condition, age, breed, and previous drug reactions, if any.
|
Induction and Doctor Preparation
The Veterinary Nurse induces (injects the IV anesthesia into) Saya, put s her IV catheter in and starts her fluid rate. The Veterinary Assistant attaches the blood pressure monitoring device (Doppler) to her and takes the first reading. The nurse then shaves Saya's abdomen and triple scrubs it to prepare the area for surgery. While the nurse is doing this, the doctor is "scrubbing in". She makes sure her hands and arms are scrubbed well and puts her sterile gloves, gown and cap on. She is now ready for surgery.
Move to Surgery Suite

|
The Veterinary Nurse and Assistant move Saya and all equipment attached to her
to the Surgery Suite. The nurse adjusts the lights and hooks up Saya's gas
anesthesia. Meanwhile, the Nurse or Veterinary Assistant takes another blood
pressure reading.
|
Final Scrub

|
Saya's abdomen is scrubbed one last time and final adjustments are made to her
anesthesia levels and fluid rate. The Veterinary Nurse then takes over monitoring
Saya's vital signs.
|
Surgery

|
The doctor begins surgery. For the duration of Saya's surgery, her blood
pressure, fluid rate, respiration and heart rate and response are constantly
monitored by the Veterinary Nurse. She is available for any assistance the
doctor may need. The warm-water circulating blanket keeps Saya warm during
her surgery. Warm oatbags are also placed around her for extra warmth.
|
Recovery

|
Once the surgery is completed and all of the medical equipment attached to Saya
has been removed, the Veterinary Nurse and Assistant move her to the Recovery
foamy. It is located in the middle of the treatment area so that we can keep an
eye on her as she wakes up from her anesthesia. Any cool oatbags are replaced
with warm ones and a warm blanket is placed on her. The Veterinary Nurse gives
Saya her post-operative pain control injection. The Veterinary Assistant trims her
nails at this time and sits with Saya until she wakes up.
|
Discharge Appointment

|
At the end of the day Saya's mom comes to pick her up and meet with the Veterinary
Nurse who will explain how her surgery went and will go through important home care
instructions with her.
|
Home & Follow-Up

|
Saya goes home with her mom. The Veterinary Nurse will call Saya's mom the
next day to see how she did overnight and answer any questions or concerns
her mom may have at this time.
