MANAGING ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is a slowly progressive, degenerative process for which there is no cure. It is determined by genetics, lifestyle and your pet’s environment. Inflammation of the joints progressively erodes the joint’s protective cartilage and breaks down joint lubrication.  Certain breeds like Rottweilers, Labradors, and German Shepherds are more prone to arthritis.  We cannot help genetics but we can positively influence your pet’s lifestyle and environment to give them back a fun and comfortable life!

WEIGHT WATCHING

By maintaining an ideal body condition excessive pressure and strain on the joints can be eliminated, which in turn decreases inflammation that contributes to progressing arthritis.

EXERCISE

Limiting exercise to several short walks rather than occasional long walks helps to decrease inflammation.

Swimming is an excellent activity for dogs, as it has only minimal impact on the joints.

REHABILITATION MEDICINE

Rehabilitation therapy plays an important role in managing arthritis. Treatments such as acupuncture, ultrasound, electric stimulation, magnetic pulse therapy and manual therapies such as massage, chiropractic, and stretching help to improve mobility, strength and flexibility.

JOINT BUILDERS

These medications are natural supplements that the body uses as building blocks in the formation and repair of cartilage, tendons and joint fluid. These supplements may help slow down the degeneration of the joint and therefore increase comfort.  These supplements are available in a chewable tablet, OR as part of your pet’s every day diet.

Medical® Mobility Support is formulated for adult and older dogs and

contains Green Lipped Mussels as a source of anti-inflammatory omega-3

fatty acids and chondroitin sulfate and glutamine.

Glycoflex® is a product that combines the anti-inflammatory properties of

Devil’s Claw with the chondoprotectant properties of glucosamine and

     chondroitin.

JOINT LUBRICATION

Cartrophen is an injection given under the skin that stimulates the body to produce more joint lubrication. This decreases uncomfortable friction and slows the degeneration of the joint.  This medication is given as a series of 4 injections, 1 week apart, then once monthly

ARTHRITIS MEDICATION

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS)

These medications decrease pain and directly decrease inflammation.

Consistent treatment for pain and inflammation helps slow down joint degeneration, and definitely improves mobility and the quality of life for the pet.

                 Deramaxx (chewable tablet)                                        Metacam (liquid)

Both medications can be gradually tapered down to the lowest
effective dose.  NEVER give human pain killers to your pet without discussing with your veterinarian first.

BLOODWORK

It may be recommended to monitor the kidney and liver health of your pet to ensure the body metabolizes medications as it should.
