Fitness Recommendations

We are all aware of the importance of physical fitness to our own health and well-being. Pets need fitness too, and they rely on you to provide it.

            Fitness and exercise provide:

  • A fun time to spend with your pet
  •  Mental and physical stimulation. It is true that a “tired dog is a good dog!”
  • Decreases the risk of obesity and arthritis
  • Improves cardiovascular health
  • An opportunity for toilet activities for dogs
At Mission Veterinary Hospital we recommend:

For cats:

ü  30 minutes of play throughout the day with your cat. Good toys/games include laser

tag, chase the cat nip mouse, kitten fishing.

ü  Provide for their natural curiosity by offering vertical challenges

(cat tree) or even a cardboard box or puzzle.

 For dogs:

ü  At least 2 walks daily (am and pm) preferably before a meal. This allows a good opportunity to take a few treats and reinforce training. This prevents the risk of bloat in large, deep-chested dogs.

ü  Make 1 walk a play session with games such as fetch, hide n’ seek, or tag in a well fenced/secure area.

ü Go to a dog park - such as the area beside St. Mary’s, where off-leash play with other dogs is relatively safe, and allows opportunity for you and your dog to socialize with other dogs and dog lovers.

Note: Talk to the doctor about modifications for your older/arthritic pet. Please ask a staff member about our selection of toys and harnesses/collars for your pet.

Walking and playing with your pet is good for you too. It lowers your blood pressure and helps keep off unwanted pounds!
